woman in her evening

black silk nightgown

woman in her evening
window seat

shaken with news of the rainy night wreck

leaning against glass
hands folded over heart
listening as edith piaf
weeps
la vie en rose

she sighs into a guiltless smile
tears of relief
running down her cheeks

covered in the smell of his skin
and the way he looked
in the restaurant light

head turned away from her past
who just died in the guest room

allowing her smooth left leg
to sway down from jeweled cherry pillows
pink painted toe pointed
toward obvious truth
on the floor

she has fallen in love

with a man who survives car crashes
